global warming

A very widely used expression today, referring to the increase experienced by the average air temperature at the Earth's surface during the instrumental era (since the mid-19th century). That increase is mainly due to the rise in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases, which is, in turn, a consequence of the emissions caused by the massive burning of fossil fuels. Occasionally, the expression is used as a synonym for climate change and global change.
