swell

Waves propagating outside the area where they originate. Swell waves are therefore not generated by the local wind, but by low-pressure systems located quite far away. These wave trains can propagate over distances of up to several thousand kilometers. Ground swell differs from wind waves in having a more regular swell, with much more widely spaced, rounded-looking waves.
