taino
An alternative name to "hurricane" given to the tropical cyclone in some parts of the Caribbean, mainly the Greater Antilles. This name refers to the ancient inhabitants of those islands (the Taínos). The word "hurricane" comes precisely from the Taíno language and corresponds to the name of a Maya god, which can be seen written with different spellings, depending on the sources consulted (Hun-r-akan, Hurakán, Juracán...).
