isobar

A line joining points of equal atmospheric pressure value on a given surface. On synoptic maps where isobars are plotted, the chosen surface is mean sea level, so that on those maps (surface or isobaric) the horizontal pressure field - its spatial distribution - at that level is represented. Isobars are drawn at regular intervals, usually every 4 or every 5 hectopascals.
