elevation
The vertical distance measured from mean sea level to a point, fixed object, or level located on the Earth's surface. This concept is frequently confused with that of altitude, which should only be applied to reference atmospheric levels or a point or object located in the atmosphere, such as a sounding balloon or an aircraft. For a location on dry land, it is correct to refer to its elevation, not its altitude.
