cloud seeding

A set of techniques aimed at modifying the structure of clouds, either by causing their dissipation, stimulating precipitation, or inhibiting the processes involved in hail formation. To this end, certain substances are used, such as silver iodide (AgI), dry ice (solid CO2), or diatomite (a rock of organic silica origin), which, before being introduced into the clouds, are dispersed into the air by means of burners located on the ground (anti-hail cannon), rockets launched from the ground, or small aircraft carrying flares from which the hygroscopic substance is released. The effectiveness of cloud seeding varies depending on the purpose being pursued; while fog dissipation is successful most of the time, in the case of stimulating artificial rain or hail suppression, the results are not as satisfactory, with an important random component in the success or failure of an intervention.
