scintillation
Rapid variations in the brightness of stars or of artificial point light sources observed at night at a distance. These luminous fluctuations are caused by atmospheric turbulence, since as the air is agitated - preferentially in the lowest part of the atmosphere - significant variations occur in the refractive index, resulting in the aforementioned twinkling.
