gregale

The name given to the strong, cold, dry northeast wind in the Central and Western Mediterranean. On the nautical wind rose used in that geographical area, it is located between the tramontana (north wind) and the levante (east wind). Old sailing sailors who, from the Spanish Mediterranean coasts, headed east, began to use this name to refer to the wind that seemed to come from Greece.
