geoengineering
A set of techniques and technologies designed to deliberately manipulate the climate system, with the aim of curbing global warming. Most of the methods developed to date fall into two main categories: 1) those seeking to reduce the amount of incoming solar energy into the system; and 2) those aiming to reduce the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, by increasing net carbon sinks. Climate engineering is seen by many atmospheric science specialists as a large-scale experiment with unforeseeable consequences, which raises alarm about the risks its implementation at a planetary scale could entail.
