blocking

A term assigned to a high-pressure system when it remains nearly stationary for a considerable time, blocking - hence its name - the westerly circulation that dominates at mid-latitudes, which prevents the normal eastward passage of low-pressure systems. Summer heatwaves or prolonged cold spells in winter, during which levels of atmospheric pollution in large cities spike, are always accompanied by a blocking anticyclone.
