blizzard
Snow lifted from the ground at low altitude by a strong, gusty wind. Blowing snow is commonly identified with a blizzard, in which, apart from large amounts of snow being lifted from the ground, heavy snow falls, with the flakes driven by the strong prevailing wind, which reduces visibility almost entirely. The term is also used when, instead of snow, the wind carries dust or sand.
