soften

Related to "softness/mildness", this expression has two meteorological meanings. On one hand, it is applied to indicate that the wind is dying down, losing force; and, on the other, to indicate that winter's harshness is easing, with the intense cold abating. Thus, with the arrival of spring-like weather, winter "softens/eases".
