Explosive cyclogenesis
Cyclogenesis that occurs very rapidly. At mid-latitudes, the deepening of a low-pressure system is considered explosive if the pressure drop at its center is at least 18 to 20 hPa in 24 hours, or submultiples thereof. At high latitudes (around 60º), a pressure drop threshold of 24 hPa in 24 hours or less is established. In any case, it is ultimately the forecaster's judgment that prevails, with the classification as such not always adjusted in every case to such rigid thresholds. Both this expression and the equivalent "weather bomb" have become fashionable in recent years, thanks to their repeated appearance in the media.
