divergence

The term opposite to convergence. Applied to a wind field at a given atmospheric level, it represents the spreading out of the vectors making up a given air current, with the resulting separation of the flow lines. Upper-level divergence (in the upper and mid-troposphere) reinforces upward motion of air and, with it, the chance for convective clouds to achieve great vertical development and culminate in the formation of storms.
