Boreas

The name given in Greek mythology to the wind-god of the north, which gives rise to words such as borrasca (low-pressure system/gale), boira, or bora. On the Tower of the Winds in Athens he is depicted as a winged, bearded old man, with loose, disheveled hair, wrapped in a tunic and holding a conch shell in his right hand. On ancient wind roses, this cold, impetuous wind was identified with the one blowing from the northeast. His equivalent in Roman mythology was the wind-god Aquilo.
