atmospheric absorption
The attenuation undergone by light radiation as it crosses the atmosphere, caused by the gases and other suspended elements it contains. That decrease is much more marked when the light comes from a celestial body (Sun, Moon...) near the horizon than when it is more overhead, in which case it crosses a much smaller stretch of the lower atmosphere, where air density is significantly greater.
