altitude

The vertical distance between an atmospheric level, a point, or an object considered as such, and mean sea level. This concept is frequently confused with the height or the elevation of a place. We can speak of the altitude at which a plane flies or at which a cloud layer is located, but it is not correct to do so for the altitude of a mountain or a building, in which case we must refer to their elevation and height, respectively.
