spectrophotometer

A scientific instrument that, as its name suggests, consists of a spectrometer and a photometer. While the first device allows light to be dispersed and transmitted within a given range of wavelengths, the photometer is able to measure the intensity of the resulting light beam, thanks to a photoelectric detector. In Meteorology, the main use of this device is the measurement of ozone in the atmosphere, both its total quantity and its distribution within an atmospheric column. There are Dobson and Brewer spectrometers; the measurements carried out by the latter - just over 200 devices worldwide - are taken as the reference (standard), as dictated by the World Meteorological Organization.
