pannus (pan)

A Latin term from which the word "paño" (cloth) derives, which we can translate as piece of cloth, remnant, rag, or tatter, and which gives its name to one of the accessory clouds catalogued in the Atlas Internacional de Nubes of the WMO. It presents characteristic frayed shreds that sometimes group together, forming a continuous layer, appearing below another, larger cloud - usually an altostratus, nimbostratus, cumulus, or cumulonimbus - or attached to it.
