nimbus
A Latin word meaning rain cloud. The term was used by the English pharmacist Luke Howard (1772-1864) in his classification of clouds and subsequently became part of the Latin names of the two cloud genera that always produce precipitation (Nimbostratus and Cumulonimbus).
