freezing level / 0ºC isotherm
The name given in Meteorology to the 0°C isotherm. It is usually identified with the atmospheric level closest to the Earth's surface where that temperature is reached. Knowing the altitude at which the freezing level lies is particularly important in aviation, as it marks the flight level above which an aircraft moving inside a cloud may be affected by icing. It is also known as the freezing level.
