aridity

A condition characterizing a place where rainfall is low, causing a lack of water in the soil, environmental dryness, and, as a consequence, very sparse vegetation, adapted to that hostile environment. The prime example of an arid place is the desert, hence it being common to speak interchangeably of desert or arid climates.
