advection

The sliding across the Earth's surface of an air mass with the resulting horizontal transport of heat and moisture. One speaks of warm or cold advection depending on the temperature of the air being displaced. Advection also occurs in the oceans, in this case of water masses. While winds govern the large horizontal movements of air in the atmosphere, in the ocean environment ocean currents do the same.
