tempest

A word deriving from the Latin term tempestas, taking on the meaning of storm, gale, bad weather... Some dictionaries define it as a large storm, but use "storm" in its most generic sense, encompassing different meteorological phenomena of different scales within it. One of the most common uses of the term refers to a particularly violent maritime storm of great magnitude, characterized by very intense winds and heavy swell. It is also habitually identified with the set of adverse meteorological conditions associated with a situation of severe weather that, normally, affects a wide area of territory, as occurs with the passage of a deep low-pressure system, or in certain stormy environments.
