broken sky
An expression with which we habitually refer to a sky in which clouds are abundant, sometimes identifying it with an overcast one. Technically, it corresponds to a sky with between 5 and 7 oktas of cloud cover (out of the maximum of 8 into which weather observers divide the sky to estimate cloud cover). In aeronautical weather reports it is coded as BKN ( broken ).
