downpour
One of the most common and widespread ways of referring to an intense rain shower. The name refers to the ice phase (water at a temperature below 0°C) that raindrops go through, before reaching the ground. They are initially hail grains and, depending on the size they reach inside storm clouds, can reach the ground as such (hailstorm) or as drops (downpour).
